Mounting & care

Hang it well. Keep it beautiful.

A practical guide to mounting Little Miss Viking wall art and height charts, marking every milestone, and caring for the wooden pieces you use every day.

Start here

Match the mount to the piece.

Check the back of your product before buying hardware. The wall surface, product weight and fitted hanger determine the right mounting method.

Lightweight + flat-backed

3M picture-hanging strips

Our usual choice for lightweight wall art, letters, plaques and shapes that sit flat against a smooth indoor wall. These are the interlocking, Velcro-style strips.

Choose the strip size and number of pairs for the finished product’s weight. Mounts are not included unless the product page says otherwise.
Sawtooth hanger fitted

Picture or sawtooth hook

Use a correctly rated picture hook—such as the suitable 3M Command sawtooth option—when your sign or full-height chart has a sawtooth hanger on the back.

Never assume that adding extra hooks increases the manufacturer’s stated weight rating.
Sectional height chart

Strips on every section

Use correctly rated 3M picture-hanging strips to support each separate section. The puzzle joints align the chart; the wall mounts carry its weight.

Do not rely on the puzzle joints alone to hold the lower sections.
Heavy, valuable or overhead

Use a mechanical fixing

For heavier pieces, textured walls or locations where failure could cause injury, use a wall fixing suited to the wall construction or ask a qualified installer.

Do not use adhesive mounts above a bed or cot, on wallpaper, or for an irreplaceable item.

Using 3M strips

A careful installation is a stronger installation.

Always follow the directions and weight rating on your exact 3M pack. These steps are a quick guide, not a replacement for its instructions.

  1. 01

    Check the surface

Use on a smooth, sound indoor surface. Do not apply to wallpaper, rough or heavily textured walls. Paint must be fully cured; 3M advises waiting at least seven days after painting.

  2. 02

    Choose the correct rating

Weigh or check the finished piece and select the strip or hook size rated for it. Account for every separate part of a wall set.

  3. 03

    Clean correctly

Wipe the wall gently with isopropyl rubbing alcohol and let it dry. Household cleaners can leave residue that weakens the bond.

  4. 04

    Press and reinforce

Apply the strips exactly as shown on the pack. For interlocking strips, remove the piece again and firmly press each wall strip for the stated time.

  5. 05

    Wait before hanging

Leave the wall strips or hook unloaded for one hour before attaching the product. This gives the adhesive time to build strength.

  6. 06

    Remove slowly

Support the item, then remove the mount as directed. Pull the release tab slowly and straight down against the wall—never towards you.

Height charts

Set the scale first. Then secure the chart.

20 cm

Most full-length charts begin above the floor

Our standard full-length charts are commonly marked from 20 cm to 200 cm and are designed to begin 20 cm above the floor, leaving room for skirting boards. Measure from the floor to the first printed or engraved measurement—do not simply rest the chart on the skirting.

On a standard full-height chart with a sawtooth hanger, the hook is commonly positioned around 195 cm from the floor. Check your actual chart and hanger position before installing because styles vary.

One-piece chart

Use the fitted sawtooth hanger

Hang the chart from a correctly rated picture or sawtooth hook. In changing or humid conditions, a removable strip near the bottom can help keep it aligned and reduce movement.

Sectional chart

Build from the measured starting point

Measure the first section’s starting height, mount it level, then use the puzzle joints to align the next sections. Support every section with its own correctly rated strips.

What to write with

Use an ordinary ballpoint pen or pencil.

Do not use permanent marker or Sharpie. Permanent ink can bleed into the grain, run or smudge and cannot be removed cleanly. A normal ballpoint pen makes a clear lasting mark; pencil is the best choice if you prefer a softer or potentially correctable mark.

Write lightly and allow ballpoint ink to dry before touching the mark.

Everyday care

Simple habits protect the finish.

Wooden height charts

Keep indoors, away from direct sunlight, damp rooms, heaters and heat-pump airflow. If the chart is not hung immediately, store it flat. Secure it top and bottom if its position is exposed to changing temperature or humidity.

Painted MDF and wood

Dust with a soft, dry cloth. For a small mark, use a barely damp soft cloth and dry immediately. Do not soak, scrub or use solvent, abrasive or spray cleaners.

Bamboo and natural timber décor

Keep dry and indoors unless the product specifically says it is made for outdoor use. Natural changes in grain and tone are normal. Avoid prolonged direct sun and concentrated heat.

Acrylic wall art

Use a clean microfibre cloth and gentle pressure. Avoid abrasive cleaners and rough cloths that may scratch the surface. For outdoor-rated acrylic, use outdoor-rated fixings suitable for the surface and local conditions.

Check the mount

Inspect strips, hooks and the wall periodically—especially after hot, cold or humid weather. Remove and replace any mount that is lifting, damaged or no longer firmly bonded.

Chopping & serving boards

Wash by hand. Dry well. Oil when needed.

New Zealand kitchens can move between damp winters, sunny benches and dry heating. Keeping a wooden board clean, dry and evenly conditioned helps it stay at its best.

After every use

Hand wash promptly

Wash with hot, soapy water, rinse and dry well. Do not leave the board soaking and do not put it in the dishwasher; prolonged water and heat can warp, split or roughen timber and bamboo.

Before storing

Dry both sides

Wipe it dry, then stand it on an edge with airflow around both faces until completely dry. Do not store it wet or flat against a damp bench.

When it looks dry

Apply food-safe board oil

Use a food-safe chopping-board oil or board conditioner according to its label. Apply to both faces and edges so the board conditions evenly. Avoid olive and common vegetable oils, which can become rancid.

For food safety

Avoid cross-contamination

Use separate boards for raw meat or seafood and ready-to-eat foods such as cheese and salad. If one board is shared, wash it thoroughly in hot soapy water and dry it well between uses.

Protect the engraving

Cut on the reverse where practical

If you want to preserve the decorative engraved face, use the reverse for chopping when the product shape permits and reserve the engraved side for serving.

Know when to stop

Inspect your board

Deep cracks, persistent odour, mould or areas that can no longer be cleaned are signs to stop using the board for food preparation.

Food-safety guidance follows New Zealand Food Safety advice to clean chopping boards with hot soapy water, dry them well and prevent cross-contamination.

Still unsure?

Send us a photo of the piece and your wall.

We can tell you how the product was designed to hang. For advice on the wall itself or a mechanically fixed installation, ask a qualified local installer.
